How do I attach lens cap string?!!!

\015 This sounds so silly. But can't work out how to attach supplied lens cap string to lens cap. New Leica D-Lux 4. The string seems to be in a sealed loop. If I push it through the holes on the lens cap, I have two short looped ends. I assume the string is supposed to attach to the lugs for the camera strap, to attach it to the camera, but can't see how if it is in a sealed loop to start with. The two looped ends are too short to attach. Anyone done this?! Assume it is the same for all Leica lens caps that come with a string attachment. Think it could be quite useful (if I can work it out) so as not to lose clip on lens cap. Many thanks in anticipation.\015
