Having problems with your Digital Cameras ?

My canon S1 IS keeps telling me to replace batteries. I have tried new batteries as well as cleaned contactswith the same result. Also there is nothing but light flashes in my display. Backlighting is ok and I can see the menu as well as the photos on my memory card, but cannot see through the lens in photo mode.

Answers :

The battery issue is the least of your worries: the image sensor (ccd) has failed. The symptoms you describe are textbook examples and confirm my diagnosis without any shadow of doubt.

Your camera is around six years old now so that's to be expected as few last that long and it's effectively unrepairable. Canon have discontinued support for the camera and spares are no longer officially available. Even if you could find a spare ccd unit, it's likely to have degraded whilst in storage and would fail soon after being fitted. Fitting is not a DIY job, and afterwards you'll still have the battery drain issue to contend with.

In summary, your camera has exceeded it's five year maximum design lifespan and is worn out. Repairs are effectively impossible and would be economically unviable. Throw the camera away and replace it.

Modern ccd manufacturing techniques have the benefit of a thorough understanding of what caused earlier models to suffer ccd failure, but the problem hasn't gone away completely. In practice, there are still very few digital cameras (SLR's included) which can reasonably be expected to last more than six years without suffering a terminal failure.

Hi, I have a panasonic Lumix, DMC-FS5 digital camera. When I turn the camera on and it's on 'photograph' mode, a message keeps appearing after a couple of seconds saying: "please turn camera off and then on again". I get the same message everytime and am unable to take any photos or even access the menu options. There are no problems when the mode is set to 'playback' mode. Powershot s410 My s410 is "old" :( but I love it and has been working amazingly over 10,000 photos in the 4 years I've had it.
