Having problems with your Digital Cameras ?

I have the hand Icon and canot get it off- I am sure that is why my pictures are not shooting nicely - this is the only different thing I have now from before

Answers :

The hand icon is just a warning that the shutter speed used for the current photo is rather slow so it's warning you that it will probably be blurry due to you moving the camera "during" the shot.

It needs more light to fire the shutter faster. If it's fast, then the chance of you moving during the shot is reduced.

So ..

1. Turn on the built-in flash. That will set the shutter speed faster automatically to about 1/60th of a second. Or

2. Get outside where there is more light. Or

3. Use a camera tripod to hold it steady. Or set the camera down on a flat surface, aim it, and then use the built-in self timer to take the shot for you. The shot will then be clear even if it's a long exposure, unless your subject itself is moving. .

4.. Last resort you can turn up the ISO speed on some models of camera's. This increases CCD noise (static) in the photo but also increases the shutter speed by 50% with each step up, from ISO 100 to 200 for example. All better camera's have this option such as Nikon and Canon. I leave the ISO set low to 80 or 100 to get the clearest shots and use a tripod if necessary when the shutter speed is slow due to dim lighting. I shoot even at midnight and use a 15 second exposure to get the shot and it works great.

Be aware that "Auto" modes will often turn the ISO up too far such as 800 or 1600 and yes that does get the shutter speed up higher but it makes it too grainy to use.

Note that newer higher end camera's like the Canon S90 or the G11 can shoot at ISO 200, 400 and higher with little noise. The S90 also has a lens rated at f2.0 which is 2x faster than almost anything else out there right now. So your chance of a good shot with the S90 is much better than with most other camera's when dealing with marginal lighting such as indoors.
It's also optically stabilized and it really works.

Next time post what model of camera you have.

My 2-year old camera has a blank screen when trying to take a picture. If you go ahead and shoot, the picture processes properly--you just can't set up a shot. The menu screen shows faintly if held at a particular angle. I have charged the battery. I have turned it off and on multiple times--doing the same thing and hoping for different results!

This sounds like it could be a bad backlight on the lcd display. Before you mess with that, make sure your battery terminals inside the camera, as well as on the battery, are clean (use a qtip and alcohol, or a pencil eraser). It's also possible ... Nikon COOLPIX S200 Digital Camera
