Having problems with your Digital Cameras ?

Have a Canon Power Shot S3IS. On some, but not all, of the pictures there is a dark spot in the center. It's faint and ghost like. Thanks in advance. Paul

This is going to be a tricky one. If you can tell that the pictures were in slightly lower lighting conditions, the problem could be related to the ISO settings. Here is a except of the ISO settings from digitalcamerainfo.com:
\015\012 *******************************************
\015\012ISO \015\012One of the biggest complaints about the PowerShot S2 was that it had a wimpy 50-400 sensitivity range. Canon addressed this by loading a 6-megapixel image sensor, which is optimized to handle higher sensitivities into the new S3. Thus the Canon PowerShot S3 IS has a wider 80-800 range. Manual options include 80, 100, 200, 400, and 800, and there are two automatic ISO options to boot; pushing the ISO button brings up all of these options. The S3 also has a standard Auto ISO setting, but couples it with a High ISO Auto mode, which extends the standard range so that beginners can get better pictures in limited lighting. This is a good move, because most automatic ranges hardly surpass 200 and therefore take awful pictures in low light. While the ISO range still isn’t as extensive as some of the Fujifilm cameras, it is definitely a big improvement over the S2’s. \015\012 **********************************************\015\012\015\012I've had this problem at night, and thought it added a cool, ball type ghost effect to the picture, and it's the only time it happened, but increasing the ISO eliminated it.\015\012There's also many other factors that could be causing this...a particle of dust or lint on the lens (possibly inside) could refract light at certain times. The CCD could have a bad spot (not likely), but could have slight light damage if the camera was pointed directly at the sun (not likely in your case, since more damage is usually done, and is permanent). It also could be some optical phenomenon that would require extensive checking out, and a high repair bill. \015\012I would clean the lens as well as you possibly can, and inspect it with at least a 10x or 20x loupe, or magnifier to ensure it's clean, then see what happens. Try to notice or take notes on certain lighting/background situations, to try to identify when this is occurring. The best you may be able to do is avoid the lighting conditions that exist when this problem occurs. It's not a prevalent problem, so most likely it's something tricky. I couldn't find a similar problem on the net, and so it's not a manufacturing or bad part issue that can be identified easily.\015\012I also read about "spot" focusing on this camera, and am wondering if that could possibly interfere with the pictures at times, but I can't see how it would do that.\015\012I would take it by a reputable Camera Repair Center, and show them the pictures, just to see if they have any ideas. It could be that they will know what's going on, and hopefully it will not entail a major expense.\015\012Good luck to you, and hope this helps.
