Having problems with your Digital Cameras ?

When I turn the camera on, it says "lens error" - but the lens is not on. It tells me to remove the lens cap and turn the camera on. Can I fix this problem myself?

Answers :

The Coolpix P100 is a bridge camera: an advanced digital compact model styled like an SLR and with many similar user features, but with a single non-interchangeable lens fitted to the camera. I was therefore a bit puzzled by your comment that "the lens is not on". I now realise that you meant that the lens was not switched on.

Although the lens cannot physically be removed from the camera, when not in use (camera off or only turned on in playback mode) it retracts as far as it can into the camera body. But even in playback mode the camera will run diagnostics on the lens when the camera is turned on. Your camera has detected a lens error, this\012 is such a common fault that I hope you don't mind me pasting my stock \012generic answer below. No point in reinventing the wheel!

Stuck lenses are probably the most common \012reason that compact digital cameras get thrown away, but there's a fair \012chance of recovering use of your camera again

The fault is \012commonly caused by dirt or grit blocking the mechanism, or due to it \012having suffered a recent fall. Another common cause is that the camera \012was in a pocket or bag and the power button accidentally activated and \012tried to open the lens against resistance. The mechanism may have simply\012 become \012dislodged or there may be parts which have broken.

If your camera\012 is still under warranty (should definitely apply to the P100 as it's a very recent model) and has definitely not been subject to misuse \012then contact the Nikon service department in your country to find out about a free repair. If \012the warranty has expired though a professional repair will far exceed \012the\012 cost of replacing your camera. You will therefore have nothing to lose \012by \012trying to fix this yourself.

Please click here\012 and you will be taken to an excellent article provided by the Camera \012Repair website. For the most part, you'll be guided on how to physically\012 manipulate your camera to try and clear the fault. The article mentions Canon a few times but the advice applies equally to all cameras with lens errors. Note that the article clearly tells you which remedies are warranty-friendly and which ones you must not attempt if you wish to preserve your rights to a warranty repair.
