Having problems with your Digital Cameras ?

My son is in the middle of Australia and dropped his Canon powershot sx130 camera. How do you reset it? He has no computer access.

You haven't said what the fault is with his camera, but it's most likely that his camera has a lens error, this\015\012 is such a common fault that I hope you don't mind me pasting my stock \015\012generic answer below. No point in reinventing the wheel!

Stuck lenses are probably the most common \015\012reason that compact digital cameras get thrown away, but there's a fair \015\012chance of recovering use of your camera again

The fault is \015\012commonly caused by dirt or grit blocking the mechanism, or due to it \015\012having suffered a recent fall. Another common cause is that the camera \015\012was in a pocket or bag and the power button accidentally activated and \015\012tried to open the lens against resistance. The mechanism may have simply\015\012 become \015\012dislodged or there may be parts which have broken.

If your camera\015\012 is still under warranty and has definitely not been subject to misuse \015\012then contact the Canon service department in your country to find out about a free repair. If \015\012the warranty has expired though a professional repair will far exceed \015\012the\015\012 cost of replacing your camera. You will therefore have nothing to lose \015\012by \015\012trying to fix this yourself.

Please click here\015\012 and you will be taken to an excellent article provided by the Camera \015\012Repair website. For the most part, you'll be guided on how to physically\015\012 manipulate your camera to try and clear the fault. Although the article\015\012 mentions Canon a few times, the advice applies equally to all cameras \015\012with lens errors and is not model-specific.

Good\015\012\015\012 luck, I hope you manage to use this information to fix your camera. \015\012Please take a moment to rate the speedy and free answer I have provided for you and\015\012 any testimonial which you might wish to add is always welcome!
The lens is stuck when trying to start the camera -
\015\012In many cameras the lens is moved through a tiny right-angle gear having a counterhold that is fixed with a tiny screw. That screw can loosen and fall out - and the lens is then stuck.
\015\012When the lens is stuck find a place with absolute silence and gently shake the camera close to an ear. Maybe you can hear a faint noise from the loose screw and maybe not - the screw is very tiny.
\015\012Now decide whether you will do it yourself or not. Any warranty is lost if you open the camera yourself. I have successfully done the below repair on a Casio EX-S10 - a camera in the size of a business card.
\015\012Make sure you have the right tools - mostly tiny screwdrivers that fit the screws in the camera and a pair of tweezers. Use a clean surface for the opening of the camera - could be a large sheet of white paper. Gently open the front of the camera and locate the right-angle gear. If that gear is in good order - no loose counterhold - try to find the tiny object that blocks the lens and remove it. Be very gentle and very carefull.
\015\012If the counterhold is loose find the tiny screw and clean it then using a needle fill the threads of the screw with a tiny drop of "Locktite" or a similar type of glue. "Open" the gear and move the lens to its resting position. Then close the gear and fasten the counterhold correctly and reassemble the camera. Try to start the camera again and if it works let it - if possible - rest an hour or two before you use it again to let the glue harden. If it still doesnt work consider changing the battries.
\015\012Good luck.
