I am able to see the photos thru the home button already taken that are stored on the card and do the other functions, but am unable to shoot new pictures because the shutter door remains closed. You can hear it trying to open but it will not.

Usually when you see this either the shutter cover motor has a problem or the cover is jammed. You can try gently helping the cover open but don't force it. You haven't mentioned the camera model so I can only give you some generic advice ... Digital Cameras

I changed the batteries in my Power Shot A720 IS recently when the low battery warning flashed, and had taken only two photos when the warning flashed again. This camera was working fine, was turned off, and then a day later wouldn't work. The LCD screen on back works only if the Mode Switch is in the review mode (or DOWN), and does not light up under the picture taking mode (or UP) position. Also, while the switch is in the UP position, the ON/OFF power indicator button no longer stays lit. It does, however, stay lit in the Mode Switch in the DOWN position. First problem in three years. Nice little camera.

The power button is jammed or stuck, I have to use my fingernails or press harder in order to turn it on/off. However, it does not stay on or off, just that the button does not pop back up. I have tried using small sharp things like needles to hopefully pry it back into its original position but that did not work either. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Hit the power button again, the lens zooms back into it's original position, shutter closes (occasionally does not shut completely), green light blinks twice, screen remains black.
