Blurry photos that are really frustrating!

\015 I was asked to do a little birthday album for my friend and to find outmost of the pictures were blurred. It was an indoor shot and the eventhappened during evening. I took pictures of my friend using autofocus... I use Program Auto w/ Flash giving me a shutter speed of 60and most of the apertures were about 3.5 - 4.0.My camera is a Canon 400D (Rebel Xti) w/ an 18-55mm USM lens.I followed some of the rules like an old rule was that the shutterspeed should always be equal to or greater than the focal length of thelens being used. And generally, when I use the camera's built-in flash,it gives me a shutter speed of 60. The aperture sets by itself sinceit's in Program Auto.I didn't use any tripod but i think the flash was enough to avoid blurry images. All of the subject I shot were not in motion.Metering used: center-weighted average meteringISO: 400As soon as i got home, i tried experimenting on my camera and used atripod. I tried to picture my guitar using AF w/ an ISO of 100...f/14and shutter speed at 8 seconds. This was indoor and not much of lightinside the room. This was without the flash. Oh by the way, i also useda self timer for this one... AF picture gave me a little blurredsubject where it was supposed to be focused... then i activated theflash giving me more blurred subject with the shutter speed at 60 andf/ 3.5. then i set to MF (manual focus), using the same subject, composition and camera settings, this time with no flash... and theimages were sharp. I tried using flash again and it was still sharp butnot as sharp unlike the previous image.Any one know why is this happening? I think this has nothing to do withthe aging of the camera since i had this camera for 4 months.\015

Evening & Indoors? The kit lens is really going to struggle here. Your only immediate solution is to use ISO 1600 which makes the shutter faster but adds a little noise to the pictures.
\015\012You really want to get a better lens for indoor work. If you need cheap, try the 50mm f1.8, it's a prime not a zoom, so you will need to use your feet to "zoom" but it's incredibly good for indoor / low light work.
\015\012I upgraded to a 17-55mm f2.8 IS, it was rather expensive but I have never had a blurry indoor shot since - I do also use an external Speedlite flash with it though, which also helps tremendously.
\015\012It's an expensive hobby!!
On page 160 of your manual:\015\012
\015\012\015\012The camera might not be able to focus the following types of subjects:\015\012- Low-contrast subjects such as blue sky, solid-color walls, etc\015\012- Subjects in low light\015\012- Extremely backlit reflective subjects such as a car with a reflective body\015\012- Overlapping near and far objects such as animal in a cage\015\012- Repetitive patterns such as skyscraper windows, computer keyboards

Blurry photos THe last few times I have attempted to use my camera I have had two problems. One, each time I turn it on it resets itself as if I have never used it and goes back to the language selection and and I have to reset the date (which I stopped doing because of the inconvenience every time I wanted to take a photo, so now all my photos say January 1, 2000).
