Having problems with your Canon EOS 40D Digital Camera with 17-85mm lens ?

Continuous Red Eyes and dark photos every other one.

\015 Hi Hoping you can help...I have the 40D Canon. I get red eyes even when I use the feature to turn it on. How can I remedy this problem? Also, should I use the Speed-Lite 430 instead of the onboard lite all the time in a low light area? Please tell me the difference in pictures from using RAW or JPEG? I am new with this camera.Thank You so much.Suzanne\015

Answers :

1) The red eye effect is due to pupil dilation. When the person is standing in dark, the pupils dilate to allow more light to enter the eye so that objects are visible. In such conditions if you try to take a snap then you might end up having Red eyes.
What Red eye reduction technique does is that it flashes a series of times before the actual snap is taken and due the series of flashes, the pupil try to adjust by closing down and reducing the red eye effect, hence stronger the flash, less is the red eye effect.
Also, there are bundles of software out there which can detect red eye and remove the same.. I am not sure, you might have received software even along with your camera that can address this issue.

2) The use of Speed-Lite 430 might not be always .. It depends on the conditions and distance of the object from the camera lens. Onboard lite should be enough to capture the subjects that are within 5-6 meters and to get rid of shadows where as if the surroundings are very dark then you might want to fallback on Speed-Lite 430.

3) The basic difference between the RAW and JPEG is that RAW is uncompressed format and you can do editing and compression at later time where as JPEG is a compressed format and you might not be able to do as much as you can do with RAW format. Unless you want to edit the images at later stage, you might not want to use RAW.

Please let me know if any further explaination is needed.. Till then Happy Photography :)

I have a Kodak c513 easyshare camera and every photo I take has red eye in it. I was also told that I needed to check my resolution. What is that and how do I do that? Also how do I set flash so photos are not dark?

Resolution has nothing to do with it. Red eye is caused by the flash being close to the camera lens, when the flash fires it reflects light from the persons eye back to the camera lens. Solution is to set your cameras flash setting to "red eye" This ... Kodak EasyShare C513 Digital Camera

Red Eye Both my wife and I have this camera. We have the red eye reduction function set but almost every indoor shot of people has red eye. I have been told that if this function is set properly it will flash twice quickly when taking a shot. Our cameras only flash once. Any suggestions?

There's two ways to reduce/eliminate the red-eye with your A570IS cameras. The first is at the time of exposure, by ensuring the red-eye reduction function is activated via the shooting menu (see page 28 of the manual). In shooting mode, press "menu" ... Canon PowerShot A570 IS Digital Camera
