I have a Canon Digital EOS Rebel XT and the built-in flash no longer pops up when needed. This started happening after using a Canon speedlite, but then removing it. I've tried resetting everything, and tried all modes expecting that the ones listed in the manual as using a flash would work, but they dont, it never pops up. I lifted up the flash with my fingernail manually, and then tried taking a picture where a flash was most definitely needed, but it still had a long delay, no flash, and

My Canon EOS rebel suddenly won't take pictures in dim light. The flash pops up and blinks and blinks trying to register the image but won't ever autofocus and take the picture. The light has to be very bright for it to take a picture. I have gone through all of the settings and everything seems to be correct. Any thoughts?

To autofocus the sensor needs a fair amount of contrast (light and dark eges) to operate. My EOS 400D flash sometimes pops up in bright daylight in full auto mode. I sent it back to Cannon who returned it saying no fault found. I then began to think that the problem was the way I held the camera and that I may be obscuring the (light?) sensor near the grip with my hand. After not using the camera for a while I am now taking shots again and the flash pop up problem has re-appeared. I am now sure I am not blocking the sensor. Any ideas?

In full auto mode, the camera tries to use fill flash, when it detects a backlit scene (e.g. a person in front of a window).
