Having problems with your Canon EOS Rebel 2000 with 28-80 lens 35mm Film Camera ?

I was taking pictures into bright sunlight switching between manual and automatic settings, and manual and automatic focus. First, the picutre would take, but the shutter would not open (viewfinder would remain closed) switching from manual to automatic focus fixed this issue. However now it seems that the aperture is stuck, and not enough light gets through to the viewfinder. How can I fix this?

Thanks for the extra info, it's just a question of whether your problem is with the lens or the body.

Do you get the same problem with other lenses? If so the body is faulty and if not it's that one particular lens.

Aperture control is fully electronic, so start by using an eraser to clean the metal contacts on both the lens mount and the camera body; a clean pencil eraser is best as dirty ones are soiled by conductive graphite which can make things worse. Pen (ink) erasers must be avoided as they often have metal particles incorporated, or fine grit which is also terrible for your camera.

If this doesn't fix the problem then chuck whichever item is faulty away and replace it. Seriously. The EOS 300 (EOS Rebel 2000 in the USA) body was very cheaply designed and manufactured by Kodak on Canon's behalf and never designed to last. The same is true of all EOS 35mm triple number/Rebel models. The kit lens which you have was also very cheaply built for Canon but by a variety of factories. Yours will be anywhere between eight to eleven years old now so have done well, but no longer supported by Canon and spares are discontinued.

Even if you can get them, spares will be disproportionately expensive to buy and beyond any economic sense to have fitted, especially as you'll simply be waiting for the next inevitable age/wear related fault to occur.

Both items are unpopular with Canon collectors, and those who actually use Canon 35mm gear prefer the more solidly built upmarket examples as they cost only a little more. If you want another EOS 300 SLR kit then ask/look on your local FreeCycle groups (also Freegle in the UK only) as that model is quite literally worthless secondhand and my last couple were acquired that way. They do sell on auction websites, but only for between £5 and £25 for an exceptional example; even then the body is usually effectively free and it's whichever lenses and accessories that bump the price up.

If you want better quality, then look for any of the double digit EOS models, or if lucky, a single digit model (in the USA this means ignore the Rebels and go for the Elans or the EOS 3 & 5). These models are sought after by collectors and users but can still be picked up at low prices or even for free.

I can't seem to get my autofocus to work on my new Canon T1. The mode dial is switched to full auto, the fous mode switch is on AF, and the Image Stabilizer switch is in the "on" position. When I depress the shutter halfway, I get flash indication, some digital numbers, but no change in focus, no beeping, even though it is on and the focus confirmation light does not illuminate. Hope I can help with some input to your problem. Let me suggest please that you switch the "mode" dial to "P" for program, check your ISO (I personally shoot ISO 100) and set it for a speed ISO 400 or lower. Most DSLR's use contrast to focus so a mir ... Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI Digital Camera

My auto focus won't work... and the only advice the manual gives me is to switch the switch in the front of the camera from MF to AF. and I have dont that already and still nothing. would there be some other button that has been pressed that I would have to press again?

The "shutter" button actually has two states, one is a "half down" position which is when you press it lightly. When you hold it in this position, the AF does some happy little blurring and centering and will eventually show boxes that it focused on. ... Canon Digital Cameras

My D70 (which I just bought on ebay) is having problems with AF. At time the AF works fine but then for no reason it refuses to work for hours to days. I have two bodies so I can swap lenses to see that its not the lens. If I switch to manual focus, it the camera works fine. I can see the little pins around the lens fitting retract when I switch the camera to manual. Seems like a problem with the internals that control AF. No other problems are apparent to me. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a contact issue - either they are not making consistently or they are just dirty. I'd start with a good contact cleaner (Radio Shack or photo store) and spray the snot out of both the camera contacts and lense (making VERY sure to protec ... Nikon D70s Digital Camera

Canon EOS Rebel XT with EFS 18-55mm lens. Trouble-free for two years. During a weekend of lots of use, suddenly the camera would not autofocus. Switching to manual focus, the camera worked. Then it started working okay in autofocus. Later that day quit altogether. (Would not release shutter even in manual mode.) Removed the lens and cleaned the contacts on both lens and camera, started working okay but only temporary. Went through several cycles of this over the weekend, so I'm not sure

Camera takes photos without actually "focusing" on the object. Seems their is no "prefocus" with the button. As soon as you touch the focus button, the camera automatically takes the photo. When the camera was working correctly, you'd push the focus button half way down and then it would do it's job. Now it just takes the shot if you barely even touch the button. Not good...........

Nikon D80 with a Sigma Lens (80 to 200 I think). In manual mode, often shutter won't release - this was a close up of a hummingbird with a fast shutter speed. Internal light meter showed underexposed, but the background was dark green. Initially, the shutter released, but later would not operate either with a remote, or by manually depressed the shutter release button. Switching back to auto, the camera seemed to work fine, but in this mode could not get the desired shutter speed. In full manual

I am shooting with a 10mm - 22mm lens - however that should not matter. Frequently my camera cannot find a focal point and therefore i cannot active the shutter release. I have an EOS Reblel (6.4 pxls) that i've used with the same (10 -22) lens and i have never run into this focusing issue. Also, I am framing pretty standard subjects like doorways etc....N

I have a Nikon D80 and the camera locks up and won't take a picture - the F keeps blinking and it won't lock into a f3.5 or whatever so you can take a pciture - why would this happen ? I generally use it in the auto mode - sometimes I try to switch to manual mode - it will allow me to take a pciture then switch back to auto and it seems to work for awhile - but it will just go back into lockdown mode and it is very frustrating -

Camera locked Hi, I've got the blinking battery symbol when I switch on my K100D. I've tried switching to manual focus and leaving for a while with the batteries out, but still the same issue. It works ok with external power supply, so I uploaded ver 1.02 firmware to see if that would solve the issue but still the same fault. Is there anything else you can suggest I try? Thanks, Brian

Good Morning I went hiking in broad daylight this past weekend and the autofocus would not work. I have a Canon 40D with a TAmron 18-270. I used av, tv, p, m and auto and I could not autofocus the camera. All I could do is to switch to manual focus to get it to work. When the lens was set to AF all you could is hear is it racking back and forth tying to focus. VERY FRUSTRATING.. Any ideas of what it may be or a setting I might have set accidentally. Any help is appreciated. Bob

Hi, I've a Sigma 28-105mm aspherical 3.5-5.6 lens. Auto focus does not engage. I can hear the motor trying, but the ring does not turn. When I switch to manual focus, I can turn the ring to focus manually, but I still hear the motor trying to use autofocus. Additionally, sometimes the shutter will not fire in manual focus while the motor is still searching. I've cleaned the contacts, but no joy. I suspect a faulty switch, but that doesn't completely explain the autofocus not engaging. I am

My Canon 28-135mm IS lens seems to have broken internally. If I try to turn the lens (as in, to manually focus it), it jams before setting to the largest aperture. Moreover, there appears to be a metal object-- a hinge, perhaps?-- stuck inside of it. What do I do?

I have a nikon d200. The last time I used it (only a few days ago) it was fine, everything normal. Then yesterday I pull out out of the case and everything seems to be going wrong. It is metering INSANELY low, like a shutter speed of 100 in full daylight produces a REALLY dark image. It won't auto focus at all, and i am unable to change the fstop in manual or aperture priority modes. I tried to restore it to factory settings and the lcd screen flashed to indicate it had been restored but no luck
