I'm having trouble getting the self timer to work to self portraits. I'm following the manual instructions by pressing the shutter-release button partway to focus then pressing the button all the way down to start the count down. I don't see the count down lamp flashing. The camera takes the picture right away.

Have a Sony Alpha DSLR-A300K. Let a friend borrow it and she used USB to download the photos to her computer. Ever since she did that, the camera does not work: specifically, all the buttons don't do anything (shutter button, menu button, playback button, etc). Sounds like when she disconnected the USB cord, she didn't use the "safely remove hardware" function on her computer. You could try a reset from the menu if you could get into it.
