Having problems with your Canon PowerShot G6 Digital Camera ?

G6 auto focus not working; otherwise camer works fine.

\015 The camera powers up & permits us to shoot pictures. The various exposure modes seem to work & out images are properly exposed. When we shut the power down, the lens retracts properly & the camera is shut off. But the lens never seems to "search for the focus" prior to shooting & most of our photos are out of focus. The lack of sharpness is not related to camera shake, subject movement or the use of an excessively long zoom setting. The lens simply is not focusing but it will let us shoot. is there an off switch somewhere in the system that permits the user to turn the auto focus off & that is the cause? Thank-you in advance for your attention to this matter. R. Hayes\015

The PS's are decent PhD cameras but all of them have issues. Power Shots auto focus IR emitter detector pairs frequently fail and so does the feedback control motor driver and firmware. The mechanical focus system is nice. As you noticed when you use manual modes the pics are in focus and in high light situations where your focal range is so great, the pics are in focus. You are doing everything correctly. These and many others are cheaply made, lack good QC, and last just about as long as the warranty if you are lucky. If it is under warranty ,which I doubt else you would not be here, then send it back. If not, it is virtually unrepairable and not worth the time or parts. You can continue to use the manual focus system, which by the way is very nice on the Canon PS, or get a new one. The cost of a repair from Canon will buy you nearly 3/4 the cost of a new one with twice the resolution, a Li-Ion battery, and a year warranty. We live in a throw away world where consumer electronics items are easily totaled. You can try ebay for a camera sold for parts. You will want one with good circuit boards that maybe has mechanical damage to the lens, telephoto motor, cracked LCD, ect. This is the only economically viable repair. If you find something good, you can contact me through HowardForums.com asking MeccaTronix a question. I will guide you through the diassy / assy procedure. It's not too hard really. You just need a tiny phillips screwdriver, some 2.50 + glasses and a little patience. Good luck
Try to get to the menus and set all to default. Some of these cameras may have a reset button or in the menu to reset all.

Lens problems can vary and can be the result of a lot of other problems which may cloud the issue, and may never be found out. Since electronics control the lens, it may be possible that some of the modules or components have changed value. In this case, it could be that it may never be able to be found out, except to use test equipment from Canon. In which case, it needs to be repaired by Canon.

Canon does have a repair department, and a toll free number. canon.com They also have a trade-in or trade-up program for those who have decided not to fix a camera, but get a refurbished one from Canon.
This program they have is great, and I have used it more than once to trade off a couple of my broken cameras. They will use them for parts on repairs of cameras they fix.

My Nikon D-40x has an auto focus that won't auto focus. Becasue it won't focus, it won't take a picture with the lens set to that mode. One day the camera worked fine. I put it up in the closet for about 5 months while working odd hours. Took it down removed it from the case, charged the battery and it just won't work. It died all on it's own....Replaced the battery, same result.

My d200 is picky about when auto focus works. It won't work for the shot I want, but if I turn the camera 8 degrees and try at that angle, it works fine. Sometimes turning the camera to manual, then off, then on, then back to auto focus does the trick, but not always. What is going on?

The focus ring inside the camera is a free-spinning lens that is controlled by electromagnets, with feedback from the microprocessor and sensor. When some dust, lint, sand, or dirt works it's way into the lens assembly, the ring can hang up, which ... Nikon D200 Body Only Digital Camera

Hi, I've just recieved my nikon d90 back from a repair and service, and although everything appears to be working fine, whenever I want to change shooting modes,( auto, P, M, flash off etc), they only work once I have selected them, and then turned the camera off and back on. In other words I cannot be shooting in the Auto mode and then switch to "flash off auto"....all that happens is that the auto focus works but the shutter will not operate. If I switch the camera off and on however, I can t

Similar to another post, I dropped my Canon Rebel XS (strap caught a chair) and it landed on my tile floor. Everything seems to work fine except the auto focus. Because I thought it landed lens first I bought another 18-55mm lens. However when I put the new lens on the auto focus on does not work on this one either. Any ideas whats on what is going on?

The unit uses tiny electromagnets mounted on a circular free turning focus ring, and there could be some damage to that. Also, there are many tiny parts inside the lens assembly that could have been cracked or damaged from the fall.\015\012T ... Canon EOS Rebel XSi Digital Camera

My D80 was purchased in April 2008 along with the Nikkor 18-200mm VR zoom lens. The camera and lens worked flawlesly until this past week end. Not too many things that can do this are simple, but here are a few you can check. First, make sure you aren't too close for the lens to focus. For the 18-55, that's only about 5" from the front of the lens, so I doubt this is the problem. \ ... Nikon D60 Digital Camera
