Having problems with your Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Camera ?

Just clicked "format memory card" and all pictures disappeared. Any way to get them back?

The data is still there as long as you haven't taken any more photos since then. It can be recovered using SD card recovery software, there are lots of them available with different benefits and features. Some can only recover deleted files, better ones can recover files from reformatted cards.

I cannot recommend any one product over another as the one I use is a very powerful and expensive package which is no longer available, but visit you memory card manufacturer's website first as they sometimes offer a suitable software package for free.

There are many other products (jusrt search "SD recovery"), some offer you a free trial basis and only recover a limited number of images before asking for payment for further use, others recover all of your images but with a large manufacturer's watermark on the images (again, you pay for the unwatermarked version). Finally there are some web-based "solutions" which shyster you in by claiming to be fully free, claim to have recovered all of your images and then hit you with a demand for payment to actually receive the data. Often these sites mine far more data from your pc than you intended, they may install malware, and once you've paid you get nothing. So stick to those options where you download and install the complete package on your pc and look very carefully before going for web-based options, especially if you don't have a super fast broadband upload speeds.

All the best packages are ones which you pay for, and the best ones are not cheap.

The final option is that there are companies using similar professional grade software to mine. You send or take your card to them and they do the job for you; an increasing number of digital minilabs in high streets, malls and supermarkets offer this service. Most will not charge if the data cannot be recovered (highly unlikely if it's just a reformatting issue).

Good luck. I hope that my reply has shed some light on the problem and has given you the reassurance that your images are still safe even if you temporarily cannot access them.
