Camera dropped into water: HD movies are ok, but pictures are bed

\015 Hi.I just bought a camera, a Canon PowerShot SX200. I only had the chance to use it for about 3 weeks, when one of my friends dropped it into the ocean. So bye bye warranty. It was in the water just for a couple of seconds, but enough to kill it. And more than that it was wide open when it was dropped. I immediately removed the battery and kept it like that for one day. Next day was still dead. I tried to dry it in many ways and finally it opened after 3 days. The problem: it still takes HD movies but the pictures are miserable. And it is strange, because the image on the display looks fine: when I press the shoot button half way, the image is focused ok, and when I press it completely I can see the preview of the photo being very white and blurry. I took it to Canon service and they said they will charge me a little bit more than half of the price of the camera and advised me to buy a new one. I don't have money for a new one or to pay for their service so a friend of mine offered to help me. He opened the camera and cleaned what he could inside. It was full of salt and sand. But the pictures are still white and blurry. And I saw that it has some water drops inside the lens. Is there any way we can open the lens to clean them? Do you have any idea why the pictures are so white, even if focusing is ok?Thanks a lot,Andreea\015

Answers :

First of all, no, you can't open the lens to clean it...the tolerances between the lens elements is so tiny you would never get them right. Second, salt water is corrosive...it "ate" your circuits. Even if Canon fixes it, it will still give you trouble in the future...usually right after their 30-day repair warranty is up. You need a new camera and possibly a new friend.

The camera was dropped in water for a few seconds. I managed to take the battery and memory card out after I retrieved it from the water. The camera was then dried and I was able to take a few pictures after the mishap. It's been a few weeks now and the camera does not work. I tried to charge the battery, thinking it was a bad battery, but the battery charger would continuously blink a red flash for hours! Can this camera be saved?

However, when attempting to take a picture the picture is out of focus and when I zoom IN it gets clearer but then the camera beeps 2 times and shuts off and closes up. It will let me snap an out of focus picture though. Is there any hope? This camera was expensiveand we've only had it a year. Thanks
