This is what someone off of yahoo answers told me...turns out it was in fact the mirror..what a relief..hope this helps you too!
It seems like your mirror is locked up in the "up" position, which is why your viewfinder shows nothing.
\015\012It's possible that your battery died in midshot, locking up the mirror. Some things you can try:
\015\0121) remove the battery, let the camera sit overnight. Charge the battery and reinsert. Try to take a photo in manual exposure.
\015\0122) If that doesn't work, try the mirror cleaning up/mirror cleaning down procedure to see if that unlocks the mirror.
\015\0123) if neither of those work, you'll have to get the camera looked at by a Canon repair location.
I have the SAME problem. I wrote to Canon and they told me to shut off the camera, take the battery out and wait 20 MINUTES! I can't WAIT that long, especially when I'm WORKING! I rely on this camera to work! Its annoying! Then they said if that doesn't work, to SEND IT IN and if its under warranty, they'll fix it for free.. if its NOT, then I have to pay for it. BUt the "technical team" will make the decision.

My Canon EOS rebel suddenly won't take pictures in dim light. The flash pops up and blinks and blinks trying to register the image but won't ever autofocus and take the picture. The light has to be very bright for it to take a picture. I have gone through all of the settings and everything seems to be correct. Any thoughts?

To autofocus the sensor needs a fair amount of contrast (light and dark eges) to operate. If you're trying to take a photo in a dim room of a dark colored subject for instance the focus won't lock and the camera won't take the picture. Try switching ... I have a Canon EOS Rebel (Model # DS6041). It is about 4 years old and just recently, it started taking only the top third of a picture. It sounds like the shutter is also responding quite slowly and the autofocus doesn't seem to work every time. I can't think of any particular event that occurred just prior to it acting like this.

This is caused by a sticky shudder and you will need to have it repaired by a factory authorized repair station, they are the only ones that can get parts and have the technical material to fix the problem, nothing in this camera is consumer re ... I first experienced a problem with my Canon S2Is camera when it was only taking pictures of blank images. I found a "fix" recommendation which seems to have gotten rid of the black image problem. However, now when I take pictures the images seem to have horizonal lines through them if I don't use the flash. Also, if I am taking a picture outside or in a lot of light, the image ends up being extremely light. Have any suggestions?

Think you need to do the fix more. Believe your shutter was previously stuck in the closed position. Now it sounds like it is stuck in the open position. Again keep trying the fix to loosen it up. Just to confirm, the "fix" you're talking about i ... Canon PowerShot S2 IS Digital Camera

Harsh shadows we are trying to take pictures for a friend's small wedding - at the rehearsal today we practiced picture taking with both a Canon Rebel XSI (using both the regular lense and adding a telephoto lense) and a Canon PowerShot S5-IS. The problem is that we are getting a lot of pictures that have a 'hard' shadow on the people in them. It doesn't appear to be a regular shadow because it doesn't 'land' on the different surfaces behind them, but is more like a shadow attached to them. Any

I received a canon powershot as a gift last year and am just now really starting to use it. The pictures seem fine, but the it seems like I am frequently requested to put in the date and time (i.e. about every 2nd or 3rd time I turn the camera on). Is there somethign I can do to get the camera to retain the date and time? It is sort of annoying that I can't turn it on and take a picture quickly since it won't let me take one until I have entered the date and time. Also, I don't think it is stamp

There is a button battery in your camera (CR1220) that remembers the date and other settings when you remove the main batteries. It probably needs to be replaced. It's in a slide-out holder next to the AA batteries (see page 184 in the manual). ... Canon PowerShot A590 IS Digital Camera
