My FujiPix S700 is flashing card not initialized

Answers :

If you have a new xD-Picture card that says "card not initialized" go to set-up and when it says "format OK? Erase All Data" press the triangle on the left of the menu/ok circle so it goes to "OK" then it will change to an hour glass going up and down until it stops and MAGIC! the card is initialized, at least it worked for this time for me.
Use the format option in the setup menu to re-initialize the card for use.

So I proceeded to format. The next message that flashes is "Out of Memory". Questions: 1) is the CF card defective? 2) is E5400 incapable of reading a 4GB CF card, should we use only CF cards <1GB? 3) Will a firmware version upgrade to v1.4 help? 4) Any other reason why this could happen?
