If the photos were transferred from the internal memory of your camera to your card, you may be able to retrieve them with special software (even after the card is formatted).

Card Locked - One problem is : I have tried 3 new cards and unlocked the cards and still recieve a card locked message when I try to take a picture. First do not panic! It is possible to recover your pictures if you take care. Take the card from the camera (powered off) and if it has a "write protect" tab then lock it now. Do not try and write anything to the card or you risk causing more problem ... Digital Cameras

When I tried to upload photos my computer didn't detect the device and said to be careful removing the camera or the photos could be deleted. When I removed the USB chord and tried to reconnect it to my computer a message came up that says "clean the terminal of the xD card with the dry cloth" I did that and the message keeps popping up.
