I don't think either camera is worth the over $100.00 that it will cost to fix. However, look at my posts on this problem of lens errors. By forcing gently the lens in or out when you start the camera and shut it off, it may get the lens to work again.
This may damage the camera even further, up to you, and may be worth a try.

I have a Nikon D40X camera with two lenses - one is 18-55 and the other is 55-200. Unfortunately, when I was at a wedding rehearsal, my 55-200 lens dropped off the pew on to the ground. It was not on the camera at the time and it has not worked properly ever since. My camera works properly with the 18-55 lens. Is there anything that can be done to fix it? Am in Italy and my Lumix DMC ZS6 camera was dropped on a stone floor. The LCD is was cracked but the lens tracted and retracted and it took pictures. Two weeks later however, whenI wanted to use the camera, it did not turn on and the lens did not open. Is this simply a matter of replacing the LCD or could it be a bigger problem with the electronics. Would it be better just to buy another camera? Thanks!

My D70 (which I just bought on ebay) is having problems with AF. At time the AF works fine but then for no reason it refuses to work for hours to days. I have two bodies so I can swap lenses to see that its not the lens. If I switch to manual focus, it the camera works fine. I can see the little pins around the lens fitting retract when I switch the camera to manual. Seems like a problem with the internals that control AF. No other problems are apparent to me. Any suggestions?
