OK, don't worry. The repair is easy to be done, although a little\015\012"creepy". I have a girlfriend who owns a Nikon D60 which presented the\015\012very same problem, and this afternoon I repaired the camera myself.\015\012It's working very well so far. Here's how I did it.
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012First of all, check whether the menus are working properly. If they\015\012are, it means that the problem is not electronic (otherwise, it should\015\012provoke a general camera lock down).
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012Get the following equipment:
\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\0121) A very small cross head screwdriver (watchmaker size)
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\0122) A can of WD40 (lub oil) - that one that has a little plastic tube for delicate jobs.
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\0123) Double faced sticky tape
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\0124) Printing paper (A4 size), and pen/pencil.
\015\012\015\012\015\0125) A good light
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012Remove the camera's Battery and SD card.
\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012On the A4 paper, draw the bottom scheme of the camera with the position\015\012of the screws; on each position, place a little piece of double-faced\015\012sticky tape (so you'll be able to know exactly where each screw must be\015\012put into). You''l need two drawings, one for the camera's outter plastic cover and the other for the inner steel plate.
\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012Open up the bottom of the D40x putting the small screws onto the sticky tape in the corresponding positions.
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012Then, remove the metal plate used for the tripod mount. You will need\015\012to remove the back of the camera as well.
\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012All the screws must go for the correct corresponding places on the A4\015\012paper scheme, otherwise you will find hard to put all the parts\015\012together again.
\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012After you have the bottom of the camera open, you'll see small gears,\015\012one red and one white. They are there to transfer the up-and-down\015\012movement from the small motor to the camera's mirror, and they should\015\012be stuck due to lack of lubrication. If you move the red gear, you'll\015\012see the mirror moving together. Spray a SMALL amount of\015\012WD40 onto the red and white gear wheels. Don't use so much that it\015\012drips down onto the optics or the delicate electronic circuits - you\015\012don't want any oil in there!!!
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012After the oiling is done, put the battery in and hold it down to make\015\012contact. Switch the camera to MANUAL mode. Put in the SD card\015\012and switch on the camera. Thereafter, try its shutter button.
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012It might start working normally, without any error messages. If it's\015\012not moving, probably the oil has not spread properly yet throughout the red and the white gears. Move the red\015\012wheel a few stops and try again.
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012Once it's lubed up and the wheels move freely, camera should be ok.\015\012Before settling all the covers back to their places, keep taking pics\015\012until you feel that the camera is functioning normally. Probably you'll\015\012note that the error message will be gone.
\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012Then reassemble the camera's parts following the screws backwards on the sticky tape.
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012
\015\012\015\012\015\012\015\012Enjoy your camera again!

Overexposed photos?? when i hit my shutter release button, sometimes the flash doesn't pop up and the view finder goes black. (it's like the camera is taking a picture but when I release my finger from the shutter release button it doesn't release) The only way to "get out of it" is to turn the camera off then back on. when i go to playback...it is a white picture. are my settings messed up and how do i avoid this in the future. Many picture moments are missed because of this!

The view finder "going black" on an SLR is caused by the mirror being up, which is also when the camera is actually taking the picture! The mirror sends the light from the lens to either the viewfinder or the sensor. When it's down, the light goes ... Nikon D80 Digital Camera with 18-135mm Lens

My d5000 fell on the floor and the filter glass of the lens broke. i tried taking pictures to see if it's still working but the view from the viewfinder is darker than usual and it would not take pics even if i press the shutter release button. should broken filter glass prevent taking pictures or does this mean there is another damage to the camera apart from the broken filter glass?

The filter should have nothing to do with the images recorded on camera (I assume it's an UV- or skylight filter).I'd say there's some more serious damage to your camera and you should take it to an authorized dealer repair shop. ... Nikon D5000 Digital Camera
