Having problems with your Nikon D40 Digital Camera with G-II 18-55mm Lens ?
The lens no longer works on auto and as I wear glasses, I can't manually focus it.
Not only does the lens allow for setting either auto or manual focus, but there is also a setting in the menu of the camera for this, too. You'll want to make sure the camera's Focus Mode is set to either AF-A (auto), AF-S (single) or AF-C (continuous). When set to MF, it is Manual Focus. Download a copy of the D40 manual and pay attention to page 27 for more detail.
I hope this solves your problem - good luck!

Try cleaning the contacts on the camera body and lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

I have a nikkor 18-200 lens. the outermost ring screws into the lens glass ring with a few very tiny screws. the screws loosened and the cap fell off. nothing is broken (though auto focus no longer works with this off) but there is a solid plastic ring that covers the screw heads and i cannot see a way to access the screw heads to screw them back into the lens. it would be a simple procedure if i could access them. any ideas?

I have a Nikon D40 which is coming upto being two years old. Recently I have noticed that the auto-focus will not work. If I manually focus I can still take photos but when auto is engaged it will not even try to focus and therefore will not allow me to take a photo. I have not made any changes to the settings and therefore I am concerned it is a hardware fault. I have a D90 and I just got, used, a 50 mm f/1.4 D lens. The lens motor sounds like it is working, but only moves the lens a small amount. Not enough to properly auto focus. It will manually focus, but the movement is not as free as another 50 mm lens I compared it to. Yes, I could bring it back, but if there is a simple fix, I'd like to do that.

Formatted SD, and upgraded to V1.2 software. Still no help.

My SD800IS was working fine while in the very hot/humid environment of Yap. I took it out of my air conditioned room and went to take a picture almost immediately. I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT camera using a 75-300mm telephoto lens. My problem with the lens is that at times it is hard to adjust the focus either manually or automatically with the camera.
