First check exposure compensastion. make sure its zero. After that set flash to i-TTL. Note that you must have some distance from the subject so that the light will have space to spread. D40 with kit lens cant do macro shot. Eventhough its on automatic mode, to near with subject can make the picture to bright.

Second, check your ISO. when condition is bright, use ISO 200 and lower. Its advised not to use fully auto mode, use P instead. P mode is also automatic mode with some fixed value like the ISO and white balance while automode, everything is automatic. this can make your camera confused with your needs. In P mode, the camera will adjust the shutter and aperture for you. Or try shot with A or S.

third. Use the right metering. Metering function is to supply information to the body on how to adjust the value. Its advised to point and half press shutter at the well balanced light part of the scene so that the picture will not over or underexposed. Use the AE-AL lock function to lock the setting. Try each metering.

bear in mind that internal flash fire direct flash to subject not same ad external lighting that you can bounce to the ceiling. Normally internal flash only use to fill-in the scene, which main lighting is supply from external flash.

Hope this help you.
Make sure that the exposure compensation is at zero. If that does not work, make sure that the flash is on automatic brightness. Check the manual if you do not know how to do either one of these.

My EOS 400D flash sometimes pops up in bright daylight in full auto mode. I sent it back to Cannon who returned it saying no fault found. I then began to think that the problem was the way I held the camera and that I may be obscuring the (light?) sensor near the grip with my hand. After not using the camera for a while I am now taking shots again and the flash pop up problem has re-appeared. I am now sure I am not blocking the sensor. Any ideas?

In full auto mode, the camera tries to use fill flash, when it detects a backlit scene (e.g. a person in front of a window). So this is not a bug, it's a feature! If you don't want the flash to fire, you can push it down and still take the shot. ... Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens

The flash is either far too bright or not bright enough even when using the auto setting. The flash either doesn't flash at all on "soft flash" and then blinds people when the flash is turned on so it produces very dark faces or bright white images. I've tried using different scene modes but this does not seem to work.

Flash When I take pictures, all of the faces are completely whited out. It's like the flash is too bright but when I adjust the flash, then it's too dark. I'm sort of confused as to what to do. I would love to be able to use the flash without whiting out all the faces and bleaching out the background. I've tried adjusting the brightness and the flash but that doesn't work. Is there anything else I'm doing wrong?

I have a Vivitar Camera that I bought from a Pawn Shop. The Flash worked fine for the first few months having it. I didn't use it for a while, and once I finally did, I heard 3 pops. After that my flash no longer works. When I switch into Flash mode it blinks and goes back to No Flash mode. Do you think it's the flash tube, the circuit or the battery that charges the flash? I opened the camera and nothing looks blown.

Hi, My D80 has suddenly developed a fault, where it registers the flash as open and in use even when its shut. This has the effect of syncing the shutter speed and limiting it to 1 200th in all modes. In addition, whilst the flash button will still change the flash mode using the command dials, it won't open the flash- almost like the camera thinks the flash is already open. I have tried prising open the flash, and it still doesn't fire even when open. There was no indication of a problem previ

Flash has stopped working on my Nikon D40. I've tried a factory reset, tried to get to the flash setting but that menu option is no longer available (highlighted) in any mode.
