Problem in motor change it
For the price of a battery, I would replace it. There are plenty of good quality chipped aftermarket batteries for the D40 for only a few dollars.

When I turn my Nikon Coolpix S70 camera on it says battery exhausted. I thought that meant the battery was dead. I just charged it overnight & it now still says the same thing. I took the battery out & put it back in & now it doesn't say anything the yellow light just flashes. Any assistance would be great. Never been mishandled, dropped, etc. It's in great condition & stays in the case unless used.
