Having problems with your Nikon D40x Digital Camera ?

Whenever I try to take a picture using "auto focus" option with my Nikon D40, (using the standard lens that came w/the camera), it makes a clicking sound and will not auto focus. But if I use it in manual mode it does not click. What could be the problem?

Answers :

This camera focuses the lens by sending an electronic signal to it. If you hear a clicking sound, the lens is receiving the signal, but not responding. I suggest you take the camera & lens to a local photo store & ask if they could let you mount another lens on the camera to see if THAT one works; if so, the problem is with your lens. A repair might cost as much or more than the purchase of a new lens (I'm assuming you have the "kit lens," which is the 18-55 mm lens) -- Amazon.com offers this lens for $100.
This is a wonderful camera; I use this with the same lens, and the D7000 with a larger zoom so I don't have to change lenses in the field. It's simple to use, does a great job. Only drawback I find is I can't use it with the older auto-focus lenses that need the focusing motor in the camera instead of the newer ones that focus in the lens, as yours does.
Probably worth repairing if it's the camera, but it sounds to me as if it's the lens that's giving you the problem.
Hope this helps!

When I use Video mode, the audio has a clicking sound that is audible in the video file. I believe it is the sound of the auto focus. The camera did not always make this sound. I have tried to have it repaired by Sony. they said the camera is supposed to be that ay. I know that is not the case since I have sample that I made without the audio glitch before the audio glistch started. Now it always happens. Is there any solution? Can anyone repair this?

The solution here is repair the autofocus sensor inside as that is a confirm on your findings that clicking in the sound is the autofocus making audible noises in the micro phone. What you need to do as I hate to say it is bring it to a local camera ... Konica Minolta DiMAGE A200 Digital Camera

I have a D90 and I just got, used, a 50 mm f/1.4 D lens. The lens motor sounds like it is working, but only moves the lens a small amount. Not enough to properly auto focus. It will manually focus, but the movement is not as free as another 50 mm lens I compared it to. Yes, I could bring it back, but if there is a simple fix, I'd like to do that.

Hi, I've a Sigma 28-105mm aspherical 3.5-5.6 lens. Auto focus does not engage. I can hear the motor trying, but the ring does not turn. When I switch to manual focus, I can turn the ring to focus manually, but I still hear the motor trying to use autofocus. Additionally, sometimes the shutter will not fire in manual focus while the motor is still searching. I've cleaned the contacts, but no joy. I suspect a faulty switch, but that doesn't completely explain the autofocus not engaging. I am

Well, I think you have at least one problem pinpointed, in that I suspect the focusing ring is jammed, and cannot rotate with the electromagnet signals. The other problem might be a faulty auto/manual switch. Of course, check for oxidation and e ... Digital Cameras

My Canon powershot A1100 IS is not focusing at all. The lens extends when turned on, but when it tries to focus (when set to "Auto"), I hear a clicking sound, as if the motor is trying to adjust the lens, but is not. It sounds like a more serious repair and probably not worth fixing. Anybody have any thoughts what this may be and whether to fix or toss? Thanks! A. Nadell
