Nikon D80-picture blurry in auto mode

\015 Hi This camera was used by my step mom and I have been familiarizing myself with it-normally I am very good at taking pics! However, when I focus in on say a face it focus's but the back ground in completely blurry. I have reset to default setting and am in auto mode. I have a Nikon coolpix P80 and this does not happen. What am I doing or what can I do to make it not blurry and take a better picture?\015\012Also with a SLR like this can pictures be taken using the LCD and not the view finder? i haven't figured out how to do that either!\015

\015\012The D80 has a lot more settings to deal with and depending on the lens the depth of field may explain the blurry background (that is desired effect on a portrait) The view finder on the D80 is for composing the shot and has read outs for the settings. The LCD on the back is for playback and the menus, it doesn't work like a live view of what's being taken (on some newer and more expensive DSLRs it does preview on the big LCD) on smaller point & Shoot cameras that don't have a viewfinder they use the LCD as the viewfinder, does that make sense? If she has the manual you may want to faniliarize yourself with some of the features, start out on one at a time for the different modes so they make more sense, you can really appriciate the camera after that and respect what pro photographers do. The D80 is not a cheap camera and I personally know a couple of professionals that use it among their cameras. (lots of different lenses that cost many time more than the camera body) Have fun with it, and if you get into it you will find you can take some fantastic photos with it. Can you tell that I like that camera?

I was at a basketball game last night and taking pictures with the d80 and the 55-200 lens. All of the pictures I took in auto focus were blurry. I changed it to the S mode with shutter speed at 4000 and those pictures came out completely dark with nothing in the picture. I changed the setting to the sports mode and the shutter speed is not fast enough because I have the same issue with blurring or out of focus.

I generally use it in the auto mode - sometimes I try to switch to manual mode - it will allow me to take a pciture then switch back to auto and it seems to work for awhile - but it will just go back into lockdown mode and it is very frustrating -

My Nikon D5000 gives out blurry pictures and the auto focus sometimes does not work. I've sent the lens to be examined & repaired and today I tested it again after being repaired. Today I took a picture of a person standing in front of a wooden fence and instead of focusing on the person (which was my intention), the camera focused on the fence. The result: The fence is sharp but the person is blurry. What causes this? Is it the lens or the body? How can I solve these problems?

Nikon D80. It worked fine until recently (maybe after I took pictures during whale-watching in a heavy rain and camera got wet). Now the view in the viewfinder is kind of greyish and blurry. Focus area brackets in the viewfinder are now always visible and white. And when I half-press the shutter button the whole viewfinder flashes in red color. Basically, the camera still works and takes pictures, but it is hard to see through the viewfinder and it behaves very strangely.
