Having problems with your Nikon D80 Digital Camera with 18-135mm Lens ?

What should I set the Nikon D80 on to take basketball pictures? when I put it on the lowest aperage I still have a little blurring. On auto it is too dark and when I put it on shutter speed it was also too dark

Answers :

I take it you're shooting indoors?

To get the fastest possible shutter speed, use the Aperture-priority (A) mode and turn the sub-command dial on the front counterclockwise until the numbers stop changing. This sets the lens at its widest aperture.

Even at your lens's widest aperture, the shutter speed will usualy be too slow to freeze the action. You can ease the situation a little by increasing the ISO, though this will result in additional noise. Personally, I'd prefer a noisy picture over a blurry picture.

If the action is close enough, you can use your flash (assuming it's permitted).

Adding lights to the gym is probably out of the question :-(

Other than that, about the only thing you can do is to use a faster lens. But then you're talking $2000 for a stop or two. That's one (or 2000) of the things that separates the _Sports Illustrated_ photographers from the rest of us.

I have a rebel xt 350D , using 75-300mm 5.6f lens to do some girls basketball photography inside a gym. Had camera set on: ISO 1600, M mode, 5.6f, 200 shutter speed (that seem to set automatically), used built in flash, Exposure level was in the middle of the chart, auto focus, al servo, continuous shooting, used awb. Got pretty good freeze action shots, with little or no blurring but the photos were dark. Some I could make lighter with photoshop but lost some detail and the contrast was too muc

Unless you were up close and personal, the built-in flash was your problem. Anything past about 15 feet and your picture will be dark. You would have been better off turning the flash off and using available light. Once the flash is off, you can set ... Digital Cameras

Shutter speed I have had my camera for 6 months. Today I used it for soccer pics and put it on sport mode and every pic I took is blurry. We looked on the information of the pics and the shutter speed is really low. My husband started to look and try to manually adjust some things and the speed will not change. States LOW. I also looked at the soccer portraits I took right before the action shots same day...and some of those are a little blurry as well. What could be wrong? Please help!

I was at a basketball game last night and taking pictures with the d80 and the 55-200 lens. All of the pictures I took in auto focus were blurry. I changed it to the S mode with shutter speed at 4000 and those pictures came out completely dark with nothing in the picture. I changed the setting to the sports mode and the shutter speed is not fast enough because I have the same issue with blurring or out of focus.

Nikon D80 with a Sigma Lens (80 to 200 I think). In manual mode, often shutter won't release - this was a close up of a hummingbird with a fast shutter speed. Internal light meter showed underexposed, but the background was dark green. Initially, the shutter released, but later would not operate either with a remote, or by manually depressed the shutter release button. Switching back to auto, the camera seemed to work fine, but in this mode could not get the desired shutter speed. In full manual

Dark exposure I have a Nkon D40x. Setting the selector to Auto, Shutter or Appature(SP) the image comes out dark. The historgram shows a spike that is totally contained in the first quarter of the screen. When I use the manual setting the image improve as the shutter speed was slowed down (1/80sec and ~7f the image improves). Any guess as to what is happening?

Nikon D40 pictures taken but too dark even in AUTO mode with flash on a bright day. also, some days ago I had the Shutter release error message while taking some photos. After that, the camera is acting weird, pictures sometimes are taken but the picture is always dark, although flash is used and AUTO mode selected. I do not see the error message anymore, but the camera simply do not take pictures properly. I tried formatting, etc with no result.

Hi there. I suddenly have a problem focusing my canon digital rebel xt. I have done nothing different to it, but cannot get it to focus AT ALL now. I am a professional photographer so tried other troubleshooting routes that I thought might cause focus problems (i.e. not enough light; played around with the shutter speed, f stops. etc.). I also took battery out, and put back. I took lens off and put back on. Any other ideas that you can suggest that would be causing this problem? Thank you for yo

I just received my Nikon D3100 in the mail today, and I was so excited. When I opened the lens cap on the camera body to put the lens on a small, clear-ish rectangle fell out. It was surrounded by a thin cooper colored frame that is easily removable. It looked like a little magnifying glass so I am kind of nervous. It seems to shoot pictures fine, but some times it tells me the shot is to dark even though I am in full light. It also took black pictures the first few times and if I point it di

I have a nikon d200. The last time I used it (only a few days ago) it was fine, everything normal. Then yesterday I pull out out of the case and everything seems to be going wrong. It is metering INSANELY low, like a shutter speed of 100 in full daylight produces a REALLY dark image. It won't auto focus at all, and i am unable to change the fstop in manual or aperture priority modes. I tried to restore it to factory settings and the lcd screen flashed to indicate it had been restored but no luck
