Nikon d 80 flash will not pop up while in auto mode

\015 The flash will not pop up when I take pictures. The flash will fire because you can hear it. I manually have to pry open the flash. When I press the shutter I hear a click which sounds like its coming from the area where the flash should pop up. The flash will not raise itself unless I assist it manually. Once that is done it works perfectly.\015\012\015\012Any ideas on what to do? Is there a seperate battery in the camera that works in conjunction with the flash unit?\015\012\015\012Help please.\015\012\015\012Rob\015

Answers :

The flash up button is located on the left hand side of the camera right near the top.   You should use this button to pop up the flash. Prying it up could/has broken this button.\015\012
\015\012Also, depending on what setting you are using, the flash doesn't always pop up automatically.   Check to see what mode you are in, on the round dial on the left -- ie  Auto, Portrait, Manual, etc.   I can move sometimes without your knowledge, and this may be the problem.

My EOS 400D flash sometimes pops up in bright daylight in full auto mode. I sent it back to Cannon who returned it saying no fault found. I then began to think that the problem was the way I held the camera and that I may be obscuring the (light?) sensor near the grip with my hand. After not using the camera for a while I am now taking shots again and the flash pop up problem has re-appeared. I am now sure I am not blocking the sensor. Any ideas?
