Faulty lens renders auto features kaput on D80

\015 The auto features on my D80 do not work. My local camera store said it was the lens (18-135)... they showed me an F---- in the display and said that meant 'Feed' and there was no 'feed' between lens and camera. They had a customer with a similar problem a few days before and tried a different lens and it worked. We did the same: chose a new lens from the display case, fitted it and all was up and running....?!!I am on the tiny island of Bermuda and cameras have to be sent overseas for repair and it takes weeks! Any ideas?\015

This is a common known problem with the 18-135mm Kit lenses that come with the D80's, and D90's for that matter.

All you need to do is rotate the lens ever so slightly to make the connection, and you may need to turn off the camera and turn it back on. This solves the problem for about 90% of my clients.

My D80 was purchased in April 2008 along with the Nikkor 18-200mm VR zoom lens. The camera and lens worked flawlesly until this past week end. The cameral stopped focusing in auto mode with no warning. I did hear a whining noise when I tried a Tamron 11-18mm wide angle lens. The auto focus did not work with that lens either.

My D80 suddenly stopped taking photos while I was in Auto mode. I noticed the flash stopped releasing. I've changed lenses, reset the camera's green buttons, switched out the card, reset the clock. It will occasionally take a photo, not necessarily in focus, and the flash will on occasion pop, but I can't figure out what the correct triggers are. Can anyone help? Lens is 18-135mm. Set Lens in in "A" and camera is in "AF"mode. Thanks much.

Hi, Also, try a factory reset found on page 129 of the manual. On the left side of the camera is the terminal cover, inside below the USB connector is the reset switch. If that does not work call Nikon digital 1-800-645-6689. ... Nikon D80 Digital Camera with 18-135mm Lens

Hi nrkelkar, In the D80 manual page 36 it speaks about the buffer. What you see as an error message is r with a number. The number is how many shots the buffer at that moment can handle. It is not an error message. ... Nikon D80 Digital Camera with 18-135mm Lens

Nikon D80 with a Sigma Lens (80 to 200 I think). In manual mode, often shutter won't release - this was a close up of a hummingbird with a fast shutter speed. Internal light meter showed underexposed, but the background was dark green. Initially, the shutter released, but later would not operate either with a remote, or by manually depressed the shutter release button. Switching back to auto, the camera seemed to work fine, but in this mode could not get the desired shutter speed. In full manual

Makes weird noise while auto-focusing - Nikon D80 Digital Camera with 18-135mm Lens

The 18-135 lens focus system is driven by a motor in the lens itself. So there are moving parts inside it, not really gears and pinions and such, but similar. If it works fine and doesn't make the focus jumpy or stick anywhere, it's probably safe t ... Nikon D80 Digital Camera with 18-135mm Lens

I was at a basketball game last night and taking pictures with the d80 and the 55-200 lens. All of the pictures I took in auto focus were blurry. I changed it to the S mode with shutter speed at 4000 and those pictures came out completely dark with nothing in the picture. I changed the setting to the sports mode and the shutter speed is not fast enough because I have the same issue with blurring or out of focus.

Hi, I've a Sigma 28-105mm aspherical 3.5-5.6 lens. Auto focus does not engage. I can hear the motor trying, but the ring does not turn. When I switch to manual focus, I can turn the ring to focus manually, but I still hear the motor trying to use autofocus. Additionally, sometimes the shutter will not fire in manual focus while the motor is still searching. I've cleaned the contacts, but no joy. I suspect a faulty switch, but that doesn't completely explain the autofocus not engaging. I am

Well, I think you have at least one problem pinpointed, in that I suspect the focusing ring is jammed, and cannot rotate with the electromagnet signals. The other problem might be a faulty auto/manual switch. Of course, check for oxidation and e ... Digital Cameras

I have a Nikon D70 (with a 18-55mm lens) and have always used it in Auto mode. It suddenly stopped working in auto mode...won't take the picture at all. Did I break the lens??? I was using my Nikon D40 at son's baseball game with the 55-200 mm lens & was too close to the fence when zooming since it tapped the fence. Now it makes a squeaky noise when trying to auto focus.
