Lens cover doesn't open when switching on

\015 The lens cover doesn't open when switching on the camera. The camera works when in PLAY mode, but the lens coves doesn't slide when in CAMERA mode thus cannot take pictures.\015

Not quite certain how the problem actually manifests itself.

If the sliding cover just will not slide back to expose the lens and switch the camera to capture mode then it might be impact damage due to being dropped. However it might also be due to the mechanism seizing up through lack of grease or jamming due to the two small spring loaded bearings that give the mech its snap locking action.

If the cover moves freely but the lens does not extend and the camera does not go to the capture mode of operation then.

You are probably suffering from the most common fault with the\015\012MJU 300/400 range of cameras that the black\015\012plastic armature operated by the sliding action becomes loosened from\015\012the case resulting initially in the cover becoming sloppy and causing\015\012the lens to keep closing erratically. More importantly the plastic\015\012armature which is positioned to operate a tiny Surface Mounted switch\015\012can cause the fragile plastic 'nib' to break off. It is this switch\015\012that in effect turns the camera on. If this is what has happened, it is\015\012the most common fault, there is very little that can be done as a DIY\015\012repair unless you have access to speciallised SMD soldering equipment,\015\012experience in this type of repair and most importantly a source of\015\012supply for the SMD switch. I have as yet been unable to identify the\015\012type or supplier myself. The alternative is to take the camera to an\015\012authorised repair shop. This is the expensive route but you might be\015\012able to keep the costs down by making it obvious that you know what the\015\012fault is etc.

If you've recently dropped the camera you may have damaged the lens\015\012tube (housing) or jarred the zoom mechanism off of its track. Either\015\012one of those problems will require professional repair. If it hasn't\015\012suffered from a drop, your problem may be due to weak/worn out\015\012batteries or corrosion on the\015\012battery contacts inside the camera\015\012which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the\015\012camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the\015\012batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with\015\012a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush,\015\012steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen\015\012into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of\015\012the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears\015\012the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, your\015\012batteries may be to weak/worn to properly power the camera, or the\015\012camera may require professional repair.
