Having problems with your Olympus PEN EP2 Digital Camera with 1442mm lens ?

Is the auto-focus of the Olympus EP2 really that slow/bad? I've read that the due to the construction of the lenses, the auto focus is painfully slow sometimes. Has that been your experience? Has it hindered you at all?

Answers :

The auto-focus circuit can be slow if a large enough "stand-out" target isn't detected, or in lower light conditions.
\015\012Not sure if this quote from "getdpi.com" applies to your lens, but it may:
\015\012I'll have to fish around for this lens ... any idea what's the AF like on a G1?\015\012It's non-existent ... manual focus only, unfortunately. (Or if there is a way to get it to autofocus on a G1/GF1/GH1, then I'm not aware of it.)
\015\012Here's an excerpt from "Velocityreviews.com":
\015\012\015\012As I suspected, the LCD is not suited to this. Its resolution is
somewhat low, and there is no sure focus position. You can only
ballpark it. There is (using the 58mm f1.4 Nokton) about 2mm of focus
movement where the LCD image does not change, but there is definitely
a difference to the lens and you would see it in the final image.
If the lens is a wide angle and it's set at a narrow aperture, this
probably won't matter because (depending on how close the subject you
are) the DOF should take care of any minor LCD-borne errors, but if
it's a fast lens, focus errors will be common. So, if you had dreams
of putting Leica M glass on it, it won't be the greatest experience.
As for using the LCD to compose outside, it should be ok, except in
direct sunlight where like all LCDs, it will wash out.
For the time being, the Panasonic G1/GH1 are much better suited to
those two applications than the Olympus. Perhaps if Olympus releases
a unit with an EVF, things will be different.

I'm thinking maybe your camera is normal, but I've only had experience with a few \015\012cameras, so I'm not an expert.\015\012Anyway, maybe you should run it by a camera shops with the lens, and see if they\015\012think it's acting "normal"...they're the best best besides the "EP2 Club" as far\015\012as experience.\015\012Good luck, and hope this helps.
\015\012Well, I must admit, that the auto focus is a bit slow.
The fact is that the E-P1 was even slower on AF performance. Olympus has significantly improved on that with the EP-2, but many report that they find it slow.
\015\012The design of the supplied 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 kit lens is the main cause for this slow Af performance. The lens has a heavy front focusing element which retards speedy AF.
\015\012The camera is not ideal for stopping action and fast moving subjects.
\015\012To alleviate your concerns I would suggest that you invest in a better optical quality lens as per your budget.
\015\012If continuous AF is a requirement for you and you find yourself hindered and limited by the camera, you may consider purchasing a new camera.
\015\012It all depends on your unique requirements and budget.

Lens Problem I have a C-8080 and I like it but I'm not sure if it is working 100%. The lens barrel is sloppy from side to side and clunks slightly when moving it quickly. It has been that way since it was new. It has some issues with auto focus as well. It has a hard time focusing on clouds and soft objects at infinity. I called Olympus when I bought the camera and mentioned the sloppy lens barrel and they told me that that is the way there made. It is slow to focus when going from close objects
