System Error (Zoom) - Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX100 Digital Camera

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the \012probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use\012\012\012\012\012\012\012 these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly ,\012 try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the \012shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , \012and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then \012try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently \012pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may \012cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another\012 way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and \012then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to\012 not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and \012down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the \012camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your \012camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of \012your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair \012center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to \012replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest\012 you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any \012off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about\012 warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

Hope \012the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards
Andrea
I had this problem on a TZ8 and solved it by taking it apart cleaning it and putting it back together again, taking care to avoid static and touching the lenses. Previously banging it on my hand, shaking it or resetting the setup defaults had only given temporary respites and not always. Sometines I could zoom in a fraction before it would give me the error.
\015\012
\015\012Seeing the cost of repairing it was heading towards the cost of replacing it I thought I'd take a look inside. I couldn't find a free service manual on the internet but did find a two page parts pdf that gave an exploded schematic of the camera. It was a bit daunting to start but not hard at all. It involved:
\015\012
\015\012Taking out the battery!
\015\012Unscrewing the back plate (6 screws).
\015\012I also took off the front plate but don't think this was necessary
\015\012Disconnecting the display (2 leads on clip connectors - flip black part up through 90 degrees to release)
\015\012Unscrew shiny metal cover plate (3 screws)
\015\012Disconnect the leads over the lens assembly (2 large leads to right side (looking from back), 1 small lead to left)
\015\012Unscrew lens assembly (3 silver screws)
\015\012Remove camera stand thread from bottom (push in slightly from the bottom to release dot lock then slide towards the left to release the right side)
\015\012Remove lens assembly (should now slide out)
\015\012Remove back plate (black screws on top including under the cable and one holding white square on the side)
\015\012Mark the relative positions of the lens parts with a felt tip pen. (I didn't but would have saved time if I had)
\015\012The lens pieces comes apart into six pieces with GENTLE persuasion by twisting and pushing once you've rotated the pieces to the correct position. I used a bit of trial and error here.
\015\012You shouldn't have to touch the lenses as they're held by plastic moldings and I didn't unscrew or disconnect anything more. To get you started turn the long gear at the side slightly to move it from the closed position. If you have grit in there then you may need a SMALL amount of leverage with a flat head screwdriver. Clean the tracks and 'runners' as you go (don't apply any lubricant or it'll help future grit stick).
\015\012Once you've cleaned everything and reassembled it then it should run smoothly by rotating the long gear. If not then you may have missed something or the dirt may have caused more permanent damage meaning replacing a part.
\015\012Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.
\015\012
\015\012Hope that helps someone else suffering from this **** lenses system design.
