I had the same problem with my Panasonic DMCFX8 .. tried different combinations with buttons and finally it worked. Here is what you need to do with DMCFX8:
\015\012
\015\0121- Put the camera in Simple Mode (the one with heart sign)
\015\012
\015\0122- While the Camera is OFF - Press Display Button and the shoot button at the same time.
\015\012
\015\0123- With both Buttons pressed (Display and Shoot) switch the camera on
\015\012
\015\0124- As soon as LCD display Shows, Release both the buttons
\015\012
\015\0125- The camera should be back to its original state - Working!
\015\012
\015\012Hope that helps.

The following is not a battery problem and the camera has not been dropped. It worked normally, I turned it off, and the next day when I turned it on, here's what happened -- and has happened consistently since then: I turn the camera on. The lens extends fully. I hear 4 distinct buzzing sounds from within the camera. The LCD flashes with an image for a split second. The lens retracts fully. I hear 3 beeps from within the camera. The camera shuts itself off.
