Lense stuck out, cap error message

\015 I have the same problem - what is the next step? Can I romove the lense or do I need to send it somewhere to be worked on?\015\012\015\012Lense is semi extended and the camera continually gives the message to remove the lense cap. Camera wasn't dropped and there is nothing preventing the lense from retracting (sand, grit etc).\015

This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include “E18 lens error”, or “lens error, restart camera”. Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move. \015\012The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. Sand, gunk, case fibers, etc... accumulate at the bottom of the case. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intreriors). Once these materials work their way into the lens mechanism,
I wonder if the lens isn't a standard size and you could find a\015\012poppable cap for it? If not, yes I definitely see how a screw-on lens\015\012could be a major cause of frustration.
This is really up to you. It is not really a good idea to leave a lens\015\012exposed; there are lens caps for a reason, and that is to keep your\015\012lens safe. The plastic cap is attached to the camera, so maybe you\015\012could get into the habit of snapping it on and off? Think of it this\015\012way: the time the camera takes to open an auto lens cover is about the\015\012same amount of time it would take you to pull off the plastic cap, so\015\012you probably won't miss any more pictures because of it.

The main reason this happens is when there is dirt on the lens, or a\015\012smudge. This can confuse the focus meter causing an error because it is\015\012trying to focus on the error on the lens. This is easily solved by\015\012gently cleaning the lens with a non abrasive cloth.

It could also be a true zoom parts malfunction for which I have no solution for but hopefully it is only a bit of dirt.
