How does the af function work with a Sigma 70 to 300 mm Telephoto lens when used with a Nikon D80 camera

Answers :

Here is an answer from Questionhub.com:
\015\012The D40 and D80 can both communicate with lenses electronically, but in addition to this only the D80 has a mechanical coupling - sort of a mini screwdriver in the lens mount.
So the D40 can *tell* a lens it should focus but the lens has to use it's own motor to actually do this. The only Nikon lenses that are capable of this are AF-S and AF-I lenses (about 30 different lenses in all).
On the other hand, the D80 can *make* a lens focus. If the lens doesn't have a motor, the D80 will use its own motor to pull focus by twirling the mini screwdriver.
The D40, D40X and D60 don't have this feature and the D80 and up do.\015\012rek('_tx8');\015\012
\015\012They say the lenses will autofocus on the D80 and about, but not the D40 or D60.
\015\012Good luck, and hope this helps.

Poor focus I am using the Nikon d80 with a Sigma 24-70 mm lens. I am not satisfied with the crispness of the photos. I have tried shutter speeds of 1/500 and higher, using a tripod, and using shutter delay to get better clarity and sharp focus, but none has worked. The quality is not as good as my 2 meg Sony! Is this to be expected from the 10 meg cameras? thanks! [email protected]

Are you using a DX lens. Do you know if you have the camera's auto focus set to AF (auto focus) or M (manual)? There are many things that effect the focus and as an added note, any shots over 1/60 shutter speed in normal light should be in focus wi ... Nikon D80 Digital Camera with 18-135mm Lens

I have a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 Macro lens working on a Nokon D40X and Nikon D300. For medium to long distances the autofocus does not seem to work with this lens. I think it used to but now I notice that from about 40 feet away the autofocus does not work. The same happens with both cameras. Other lenses work fine so I don't think it is the camera. Is there any history of problems or is it a feature of the lens? thanks, Richard Brand

Nikon D80 with a Sigma Lens (80 to 200 I think). In manual mode, often shutter won't release - this was a close up of a hummingbird with a fast shutter speed. Internal light meter showed underexposed, but the background was dark green. Initially, the shutter released, but later would not operate either with a remote, or by manually depressed the shutter release button. Switching back to auto, the camera seemed to work fine, but in this mode could not get the desired shutter speed. In full manual

Hi all, I wonder if you can supply some advice regarding a Sigma17-35mm lens I purchased earlier in the year. Basically if I use the automatic or 'P' setting on my Canon EOS 30D camera the image is over exposed by 1 to 2 stops. If I use the same functions with my Canon 18 -55 kit lens the exposure is correct so I would presume the camera is not causing the problem. The only way I can get a correct exposure with the Sigma lens is to compensate manually for each shot. Please note the exposure p

Nikon D100 Hi. Out of the clear blue my af lens doesn't work. No motor sound. Can use manually. Is there a motor in the lens that needs replacing? I think its only 4 years old (inhered camera). Nikon AF 70-300mm. I don't really have the money to go to camera store without indications of what I need. How costly is the motor? Also there is no light on the internal view box. Can you help? Thanks, Mary Louisville, KY

If the lens is AF (not AF-S) there is no motor in the lens. A motor in the camera turns a screw in the lens mount to focus it. If it is easy to turn it manually, my first recommendation would be to check that you didn't accidentally bump the focus ... Nikon D100 Digital Camera

Hi, I had a spare kodak c330 camera which was in perfect working condition. Since I am using a Nikon camera now, i thought of converting the kodak camera to an infra-red camera. so i opened it, and after a few unsuccesful attempts, I was finally able to open the lens assembly and take out the infra-red filter. however, when I was putting everything back in place(assembling), there was a big spark - one like short circuit - probably caused by the huge capacitor that is used for the flash circuit.
