Having problems with your Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W1 Digital Camera ?

W1 Sharpening I am new to the Sony W1 and I have read somewhere that the camera should be set to the P mode and the sharpening to the ( - ) minus and it would yeild the best results. I am confused, why would you want the picture to be less sharp if your shooting nature for example. Wouldn't it be better to use the + setting? When I download the pictures into my Sony laptop using the Window XP program that came with the Sony K35, how do I view the settings that the camera was at when the pi

Answers :

I've never heard this philosophy applied to the W1. i usually hear about this associated with the 828 and higher end cameras. the (-) setting is usually used to reduce the amount of noise that the image will have straight from the cam.\015\012\015\012the principle applies to the W1, also (i just never hear it talked about). if you want images that possess the least amount of noise, use (-). but be warned, you will need to sharpen after the fact in an imaging program.\015\012\015\012this will lead to softer photos. however, when a camera applies sharpening, it is also applying it to the noise and not just fine detail. this means that the noise is emphasized.\015\012\015\012In windows, right click on the image. go to properties. then click the summary tab, then the advanced button. the data that you will see is known as EXIF data, and details all the settings your camera used to capture the image.\015\012\015\012if you are after the sharpness parameter, windows by default will not do this. you will need a third party viewer that can read exif. my personal favorite is Irfanview. you need to download the plugins in order to view exif. once you have installed the program and the plugins, open an image. press 'I' and then press 'E'. scroll to the bottom, and there is your sharpness setting.
I've owned the W1 for a while now and tried what was mentioned here about sharpness (-) according to some , and (+) according to others :) Well (IMO) the best setting is (normal) , unless there's something real strange in the surroundings that causes the noise supression to lessen the details .. in these conditions putting sharpness + helps a bit , but again If you do this later on any post processing program like PS you'll get better results.\015\012\015\012 The mistake that I learned not to make though is using sharpness + and ISO 400 , the amount of noise was sooooo bad\015\012\015\012 As for using P , yes this is true after using the W1 for a few days you'll find yourself using P most of the time and M on occasions . The reason is simple. Auto does not give you any flexibility in the Menu not even CF , or WB which have a tremendous effect on the quality of the pic.\015\012\015\012You can download any free software like Irfan view http://www.IrfanView.com\015\012\015\012and you'll find the option to read the Exif file of the pic. (where the camera settings are kept).

Doesn't do this all the time but seems to get worse over the course of time when I use it more frequently. used to get better after I would take one picture, then it would settle down and do one ok shot, the next one vibrates, next one ok. Right now no vibration. What is going on?

Lost Pictures Our company has the Sony MVC-CD500 digital camera. I recently used this camera to take several pictures while on a job site. Have a Sony Alpha DSLR-A300K. Let a friend borrow it and she used USB to download the photos to her computer. Ever since she did that, the camera does not work: specifically, all the buttons don't do anything (shutter button, menu button, playback button, etc). Any ideas out there to try and and get this camera to act like its old self? Thanks! p.s. when I get my pictures off the camera, I just remove the card and insert it into my computer; I don't do the USB method she used.

Sounds like when she disconnected the USB cord, she didn't use the "safely remove hardware" function on her computer. You could try a reset from the menu if you could get into it. What are the optimal settings for my digital camera? I have a brand new Canon PowerShot 12.1-Megapixel Digital ELPH camera, but I've been really disappointed in the quality of pictures it takes. For example, sometimes there are these smallish blurred white circles on the pictures. Can you recommend optimal settings that I should be using? I use my camera indoors and occasionally outdoors, so whatever settings best cover all different conditions would be ideal.
