The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel\012 after dropping it. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the \012probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.
Use\012\012\012 these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.
Firstly ,\012 try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.
Try holding the \012shutter button while switching on the camera.
Look at the lens , \012and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then \012try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).
Try gently \012pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may \012cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.
Another\012 way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and \012then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to\012 not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and \012down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the \012camera is enough to get things going again.
Try hitting your \012camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of \012your hand.
Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair \012center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to \012replace the camera.
If it is still under warranty I would suggest\012 you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any \012off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about\012 warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.
Hope \012the advise is useful.

Changed battery, memory stick, did "reboot", pulled battery for 30 seconds. Nothing made any difference. I can plug in to PC and view or pull pictures off. It's like the mode button is also a power button.

When power is turned on the zoom lense moves in and out on its own for a couple of seconds then stops. Camera remains on (battery is charged) The message changes from "access" to "turn the power off and on again." When that is done the same process happens again. Photos can be retrieved that are in the memory to view but the problem is getting to the starting screen in order to take a picture. What's up with that? Hope you can help!
This could be dust or lint or sand that has worked it's way into the lens assembly, and is keeping the lens from initializing. Often, you can take compressed air and blow it into the front lens assembly, to try to free up the small gears there. H ... Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55 Digital Camera
